Trapped in Capri…Not Too Shabby

May 28, 2012

I’m sorry for the delay in my blog the past few days. The delay was due to the busy schedule, travel and lastly be stranded on the most beautiful place I’ve ever been besides Athens, Ga of course.

To begin today’s blog I have to star with Friday evening. Arthur’s mother, aunt and grandmother were able to make the trip to Cortona to spend a few days with Artie. The got settled into their hotel and we were able to all go share a family meal here in town. I don’t remember the name of the restaurant but we had an amazing meal and evening together just sharing stories. I always love eating and being around Arthur’s mother and his family. Arthur has to be my first friend from Boston and getting to know his family over the past few years has been amazing. Arthur’s mother definitely had her hands full when Arthur was the last child to be born and anyone that knows Artie prays for her ha. She loves her boy and he loves her. We had a test the next day so we said goodbyes and Arthur’s grandma was so kind to bring me a Boston Red Sox shirt. I sure will have to wear it around Artie to make him feel more at home. We hustled up the hill and crammed a good 3-4 hours of studying in.

We woke up early on Saturday and knocked out the test with me personally get a B. We were all packed and ready for a great long 4 hour trip down to Naples for the weekend. Hopping on the train we crowded into a car together listening to music and enjoying each others company. Kristen, Kae Ashleigh, Charlotte, Caroline, Sarah, Natalie and Shelby all decided to go to Rome for the weekend so we all went our separate ways at the Rome station Kae Ashleigh shed a tear because she was going to go through withdrawals after spending every waking moment with us since we got here. We found a ticket for the next train and continued to Naples.

Arriving at a crowded station we tried to get our bearings to find a bus to our hostel for the evening. The city was so crowded and not to mention sketchy, but we were able to safely to our room to get cleaned up. Since it was later in the evening and we really didn’t have any plans we just winged it. We found a nice Italian seafood place and chowed down. This restaurant is the only one I’ve even been to whose fries tasted identical to McDonald’s so I aptly ordered a second helping. Stuffed bellies and feeling better we just wandered the city. We stumbled upon a concert in the middle of an old castle in the middle of the city. We stayed for a few minutes taking in the whole scene and went towards the old part of town. We were walking and then all of a sudden we turn to see a whole indoor city. We were shocked at the enormous structure that was just out of no where. Everyone around the town just acts like many of the buildings are normal, but to us everything was so elaborate. Staying for a second we continued our quest finding more and more amazing buildings.

We were still wandering and we found the coast and saw fireworks. You could see the outline of Pompey in the sky and it was so beautiful to see the volcano in the distance. While at the edge of the water a man walks up to us and asks us if we want to hop in his boat for a water tour. All 9 of us hopped in and enjoyed the great float on the water. After that we were all tired and chose to save up energy for our trip to Capri the next day.

The blaring alarms goes of early and we were on our feet running to the ferry. An hour and a half later we were staring at one of the most beautiful islands in the world. We were greeted by cheering protestors of the ferry system and just took off on foot through the town. Stopping only for a second to get a frozen lemonade and orange juice drink we walked along the cliffs taking in the beautiful ocean. We had walked for over an hour and were able to find an awesome beach side restaurant to fill our stomachs up for a moment. An hour later we were on the bus to Anacapri where we found a chair lift to highest point on the mountain. When I say you could see everything for miles you really could. We were so high up you could see Naples all the way across the water. The scene was straight out of Avatar all the birds flying up in the clouds around and below us. The view was great and we made our way back down to the dock to get a ferry home. Here’s where the story got interesting. We were suppose to grab a ferry back to Naples and an evening train back to Cortona. But we were unaware at the time to the strike on the ferries so we had to sit on the dock for 4 hours waiting for the only boat off the island.

We made it back to the hostel and were able to rest up again to get home the next day. We woke up early and made the long walk to the train station trying to save money not taking the bus. We enjoyed a breakfast at McDonald’s and got on our train with everyone passing out as soon as we were in our train car. We hopped off at our connecting train and as we were running to the platform it was zooming away and we were stuck. We then had to wait 30 more minutes for another train to make it safely back to home. We had such an amazing weekend and saw the most beautiful island I’ve ever seen. Tired and sleepy we crashed hoping to survive the next busy traveling day.
